    Ductwork Repair & Installation

At Tyndall HVAC, we know the right ductwork makes a big difference in how well your heating and cooling system works. Different materials have their pros and cons, including how durable they are, how easy they are to install, and even how well they hold up against rodents. Here's an overview of the three types we most often use: Wireflex, Alumaflex, and Metal.

    Choosing the Right Ductwork

The best choice depends on your budget, the layout of your home, and whether rodent resistance is a concern. Flexible ductwork like Wireflex or Alumaflex generally have higher insulation values (R6 to R8), while metal ductwork have an R-value of about R2 to R4 once wrapped. If rodent protection is a priority, metal is the best option.

    Types of Ductwork We Install

    Wireflex Ductwork

Also called flexible ducts, Wireflex is a wire coil covered with durable plastic and insulated with fiberglass. It is useful in spaces where rigid ducts will not fit.

Benefits: Flexible, quick to install, and less expensive than metal ductwork.

Disadvantages: Less durable, can tear, and airflow may be restricted if bends are too sharp or not installed correctly.

Rodent Resistance: Low. Rodents can chew through if it is exposed.

R-Value: Older ductwork was R4. Current options are R6 or R8, with R8 being the standard used in most homes today.

    Alumaflex Ductwork

Made from multiple layers of aluminum, usually with insulation. Lightweight and resistant to corrosion, making it good in humid areas.

Benefits: Resists moisture, reflects heat, and is easier to handle.

Disadvantages: Costs more than Wireflex and can be crushed or punctured easily, especially from other trades if the ductwork is installed in the crawl space.

Rodent Resistance: Moderate. Aluminum helps but may need extra protection in high-risk areas.

    R-Value: R6 and R8.

    Metal Ductwork

Made from galvanized metal and considered the most durable type of ductwork.

Benefits: Fire-resistant and provides smooth airflow for better efficiency.

Disadvantages: Higher material and labor costs, and may generate noise at high airflow speeds if not sized correctly.

Rodent Resistance: High. Rodents cannot chew through metal.

R-Value: Zero. Metal ductwork is often uninsulated and usually needs to be insulated after it is installed, which provides an R-value of about R2 to R4.

    Key Considerations

    Budget Impact

Wireflex is most cost-effective; Metal has highest installation costs.

    Home Layout

Flexible ducts work better in tight spaces; Metal provides optimal airflow.

    Rodent Protection

Metal is best; Alumaflex is moderate; Wireflex requires extra protection.

    Insulation Needs

Flexible ducts offer R6-R8; Metal requires post-installation wrapping for R2-R4.
